The Winter Solstice, an important solar term in China's traditional 24 solar terms, is also a folk festival widely celebrated in China. It is regarded as a major festival in winter, and on this day, people in many northern regions have the custom of making and eating dumplings.
As the Winter Solstice approached on December 18, the Longshan Road Sub-district in the central district of Zaozhuang invited international students to the Old Railway Station Community to participate in the “Winter Has Arrived, Spring Is Not Far“ traditional culture experience event, where they made dumplings themselves to deepen their understanding of Chinese festive customs and food culture.
At the scene, although the international students were unfamiliar with the process of making dumplings, they were full of interest and kept busy. Led by community staff, the students placed a round, rolled-out dough wrapper in the palm of their hand, used chopsticks to put the seasoned meat filling onto the wrapper, and skillfully pinched it together with both hands. In no time, one after another, beautiful dumplings were wrapped.
When plate after plate of steaming, fragrant dumplings were served, the festive atmosphere was instantly ignited. Community staff and international students took photos with their labor fruits. Savoring the “Winter Solstice dumplings“ they made themselves, the happy and content smiles on everyone's faces brought the event to a satisfactory conclusion.
