Her transformation under Iranian coach Bagher since 2017 has been remarkable. From a 1-3 record initially, Shi has lost just twice in her last 18 fights. “When we met, she lacked physicality - just an ordinary girl,“ Bagher told Xinhua. “Now she's excelled in every aspect, even English.“ The coach, who also teaches economics at a Yunnan university, runs what he calls “more an English corner than MMA gym“ with his international roster.
Despite training only six weekly hours - far less than peers - Shi's progress astonishes her coach. Recently, she trained with champion Zhang Weili, whom she admires: “Weili's championship mentality inspires me. After double sessions, she'd still train more with Bagher.“
While awaiting her UFC debut date, Shi remains committed to both careers. “If results fall short, I'll increase training - but I won't quit medicine,“ she affirmed. The UFC opportunity has deepened her sense of responsibility: “I'll keep evolving to repay my supporters. When my title shot comes, I'll be ready.“
