Trump is on a three-day state visit to China, which started on Wednesday, the first by a sitting US president in nearly nine years.

During the talks, Xi urged the US to handle the Taiwan question with extra caution, saying that it is the most important issue in China-US relations.

He emphasized that if handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy, he said.

Noting that "Taiwan independence" and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water, Xi said that safeguarding peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is the greatest common denominator between China and the US.

Xi underlined the need for China and the US to find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era. He said that the two countries have more common interests than differences, that success of one is an opportunity for the other, and that a stable bilateral relationship is good for the world.

"China and the United States both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. We should be partners, not rivals. We should help each other succeed and prosper together," he said.
