Most people know Weifang because of its kites. They have heard the tales of Weifang carried by kites across the tides of Bohai Bay and beneath the vast skies of Qilu Land, reaching out to the far‑flung world.

This year, however, many are discovering Weifang anew — as a National Historic and Cultural City.

Weifang is the heart of Dongyi civilization, the hinterland of Qi culture, a renowned center of Confucian classical studies during the Han era, and a leading hub of epigraphy through the Ming and Qing dynasties. With over 8,000 years of human cultural history, some 2,200 years of administrative heritage, and more than 1,400 years as a built city, this land possesses a historical rarity all its own.

Generations of distinguished figures have graced this place, shining through the ages.Emperor Shun of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors was born in Zhufeng. Cangjie, the legendary inventor of Chinese characters, created writing here.Zheng Xuan from Gaomi annotated the Confucian classics.Jia Sixie authored Qimin Yaoshu, the seminal agricultural treatise.Su Shi ascended the Chaoran Platform and composed the timeless verse"When will the bright moon appear? Wine cup in hand, I ask the sky."Zhang Zeduan, Li Qingzhao, Zheng Banqiao, Chen Jieqi, Huang Yuanyu, Mo Yan, and many othereminent figures have all left their marks on Weifang, keeping its cultural legacy alive for millennia.
