Restoration methods vary according to the age and condition of each structure. The operator says it follows a principle of minimum intervention, using technologies including laser scanning and digital modeling to guide repairs while preserving the area's network of lanes and its relationship with the surrounding hills.

　　A network of 16 street museums now uses historic buildings and sites to tell stories about the area's past. The latest major phase of the core cultural precinct opened in March 2024.

　　The roughly 37,000-square-meter precinct is now home to 74 businesses and has an occupancy rate of about 90 percent, according to the operator. Forty of the tenants are classified as cultural and creative businesses, while others include cafes, restaurants, accommodation providers and offices.

　　The figures reflect the growing diversity of cultural and commercial activities taking shape in the restored quarter.

　　More intensive use of historic buildings has also encouraged the introduction of new conservation technologies.

　　Tanhua Theater, for example, occupies a residence built in 1932 that reopened after restoration in 2021. Monitoring equipment installed in the building can detect changes that may indicate settlement or tilting, supplementing regular inspections by staff, according to the operator.

　　By January 2026, 12 key historic buildings in Tanhualin had been fitted with monitoring devices. Other sensors detect smoke and flooding and alert staff, allowing managers to keep track of building conditions as the old structures take on new cultural and commercial functions.
