Taken separately, these might seem like small, private stories. Together, they trace nearly three decades of China-US educational exchange.

　　Since 1996, the CEAIE has worked with the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Committee on United States-China Relations on a teacher exchange program, establishing a structured channel for two-way exchanges between educators in the two countries.

　　Over the years, those exchanges have expanded beyond teachers. Programs have grown from yearlong teaching placements to language summer camps, student exchanges and dual-degree programs. What began as individual journeys across the Pacific has gradually developed into a broader network of recurring exchanges.

　　In November 2023, China proposed an initiative inviting 50,000 young Americans to China over five years for exchanges and study.

　　In May, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the target of the "50,000 in Five Years" initiative had been reached two and a half years ahead of schedule.

　　The number tells only part of the story. Behind it are generations of teachers, students and program organizers who have kept the exchanges going. Face-to-face meetings let them know a specific person and a real society, and allow one personal cross-border experience to become the starting point of the next friendship.
