The initiative has also driven a string of milestones. In January 2025, China led the development of the first ISO standard for bamboo drinking straws, the first international standard for a product under the BASP initiative. In last October, a new technology for bamboo fiber composite materials in car interiors passed an expert review; bamboo fiber headliners and other interior components have since met the performance requirements of major automakers and are now mass-produced in nearly 20 vehicle models.

Earlier this year, the BASP initiative was formally incorporated into China's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30), shifting the it from a time-limited campaign to a long-term, institutionalized national strategy. Not long after, in June, the China Express Association launched its own version of the initiative, targeting an average annual growth of 50 percent in bamboo-based express packaging over the next five years to reach at least 1 billion units by 2030.

  Huaihua's bamboo revival

For regions like Huaihua with abundant bamboo resources, supporting policies and the shift in market needs have opened new economic opportunities. The local bamboo industry, once an undermanaged rural livelihood, is now part of the country's broader strategy for sustainable development.

Sitting between the Wuling and Xuefeng mountain ranges in southwestern Hunan province, Huaihua is home to 1,127 square kilometers of bamboo forests.
