World Insights: LatAm journalists explore drivers of China’s NEV industry

The city's industrial strengths extend from NEVs and key components to charging infrastructure and power transmission equipment, creating opportunities for cooperation across different stages of the energy transition.

At the exhibition area of charging infrastructure operator Star Charge, Virgilio Arias, president of Mexico's Front Page Club, stopped in front of a photograph showing an electric-bus charging station in Mexico City.

"I've just learned that this Chinese company has provided charging facilities for three Bus Rapid Transit lines in Mexico City and Monterrey, supporting the operation of more than 150 electric buses," Arias said.

The example highlighted how Chinese technologies are being applied to local transportation systems in Latin America. As Mexico and other countries in the region accelerate their energy transitions, cooperation in charging infrastructure and electric mobility could help address practical needs while advancing shared sustainable development goals, Arias said.

Green cooperation also extends beyond transportation to the infrastructure needed to transmit clean energy over long distances.

For Samira de Castro, president of the National Federation of Journalists of Brazil, a visit to NR Electric brought an unexpected connection to a project she had covered years earlier.

In 2012, she wrote a report on Brazil's Belo Monte hydropower project. During her visit in Changzhou, she learned that the company's technology had been used in the project's second-phase ultra-high-voltage transmission system.
