Inside the camp, the internees endured harsh conditions. Outside, local Chinese risked their lives to provide aid, offering hope amid despair. The documentary highlights the bravery of ordinary people like Tan Yunlong, a cook, and his neighbor Han Xuting, who secretly passed supplies to the internees using bamboo poles. The cleaning workersZhang Xingtai and his son helped smuggle out a plea for help, leading to the escape of Arthur W. Hummel Jr. and Laurance Tipton—an act that opened the door to freedom for many.On August 17, 1945, the camp was liberated by seven paratroopers—six Americans and Chinese interpreter Wang Chenghan. These courageous actions reflect not only the wisdom and bravery of the Chinese people but also a shared human longing for freedom and peace in times of war.
