Who would have thought that a Mexican archaeologist dedicated to the study of ancient American civilizations would pause and marvel repeatedly in a courtyard on Shangxin Street, Jinan?
Recently, Dr.Darien, with his deep knowledge of Mayan culture and ancient South American architecture, stepped into the Shandong Ancient Architecture Museum – a four-courtyard-deep compound from the Republic of China era, designed by a student of Liang Sicheng and steeped in over 90 years of history. And so began a cross-cultural dialogue on ancient architecture between China and Mexico.
As an archaeologist, Darienhas a keen eye for the most striking architecture. Bending down to examine the auspicious beasts on display – Chinese dragon, phoenix, lion, tianma– he immediately thought of the Rain God and God of Death that adorn Mayan buildings. It turns out that no matter how vast the distance between them, ancient peoples worldwide adopted mythological elements to endow buildings with spirit and meaning.
