Drones, satellites aid China’s border rescue after Nepal mudslide, while experts explain why joint monitoring, early warning are challenging?

  The data center is simulating disaster scenarios and integrating new high-resolution imagery and drone survey data to continuously produce hazard and risk maps to support frontline rescue operations, the Science and Technology Daily reported.

  With roads blocked and communications disrupted, aerial assets have played a key role in restoring information links.

  China"s Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) deployed two Wing Loong unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Zigong in Southwest China"s Sichuan Province and Xigaze in Xizang. The UAVs provided continuous relay support for more than 22 hours in the plateau valleys, enabling about 6,069 user connections and supporting over 661 calls.

  Meanwhile, 11 drone pilots from member organizations of a mechanism under the National Disaster Reduction Center of China (NDRCC) are divided into monitoring and delivery groups, operating seven reconnaissance drones and two heavy-lift drones around the clock, according to the Science and Technology Daily. They provide real-time information and send basic necessities to frontline rescuers.

  To guard against potential risks, China Anneng Construction Group deployed reconnaissance drones to survey the disaster area, assess terrain and search for trapped people. The portable wireless emergency surveillance cameras monitor potential hazards around the clock. Portable satellite stations provide emergency communications and transmit live video and voice data to keep rescue command and coordination running smoothly.
