Drones, satellites aid China’s border rescue after Nepal mudslide, while experts explain why joint monitoring, early warning are challenging?

  Satellite remote sensing, which enables all-weather and around-the-clock monitoring, is being used to track the debris-flow disaster in Gyirong County. The MEM instructed the NDRCC to activate its satellite emergency data acquisition mechanism. It is making comprehensive use of satellite data from Huanjing Jianzai, Ziyuan and Gaofen high-resolution Earth-imaging satellite programs to monitor the disaster, China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

  Data from multiple Chinese satellite programs are being used to pinpoint the ice-and-rock avalanche source, map landslides, locate the barrier lake and assess downstream damage, while continuously monitoring changes in the lake"s area and overflow, according to CCTV.

  In the core rescue area, firefighters are conducting a systematic, grid-by-grid search with the assistance of enhanced radar life detector that can detect signs of life buried up to 20 meters beneath mud; a long-probe gas detector can reach into narrow gaps to help guide rescue teams.

  China Anneng has sent more than 200 experts and rescue personnel with 120 pieces of equipment, including reconnaissance drones and 3D laser scanners, to the disaster zone. Sixty workers and 28 machines are conducting road-clearance operations along National Highway G216, using rocks to rebuild damaged roadbeds.

  According to Wu Zhonghai, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the rescue effort faces three major challenges: road access, aircraft landings and limited space for equipment.
