According to Maoyan Professional Edition data, as of the evening of December 3rd, Zootopia 2 has grossed $637 million worldwide. Of this total, the Chinese mainland box office exceeded 2.16 billion yuan (approximately $315 million), setting multiple records including the highest-grossing imported animated film in Chinese box office history. Beyond the bustling cinemas, the film’s protagonists Judy and Nick have unexpectedly appeared in a rural courtyard in Binzhou, Shandong! Local rural youth Zhao Tongkai spent 6 hours "hand-rubbing" black wheat grains to create a 15-square-meter cartoon painting in his own yard, vividly recreating this classic duo. Since the video was uploaded, it has garnered over 4 million likes and more than 100 million views.
Creating paintings with grain in the yard is Zhao Tongkai’s hobby during his agricultural downtime. Using wheat grains and corn, he outlines vivid and lively images. From impromptu creations in the courtyard of his childhood home to now gaining the attention of millions of fans at home and abroad, this rural youth—who has never received professional art training—uses his unique grain paintings to bridge rural art with the world.
Zhao Tongkai has loved painting since he was a child. At the age of five or six, he often made clay figurines and paper cuttings. The more than 20 mu (approximately 1.33 hectares) of farmland at home is not only the foundation of his livelihood but also the source of inspiration for his artistic creations. Every wheat harvest season, the grains on the threshing ground become his "paintbrushes," and small sticks serve as "brush handles." Chickens and dogs running around can also "come to life" on the grains under his hands. "I don’t waste paper or paint, and I’m extremely happy painting all afternoon," this pure love has become the original aspiration that keeps him committed to creating grain paintings.
