Never having received professional art training is a regret for Zhao Tongkai, but it has also allowed him to develop a unique creative style. He creates his grain paintings without referring to models, relying entirely on his own exploration. From simple animal patterns to the complex Zootopia characters Judy and Nick, he adjusts and polishes repeatedly, enjoying the joy of striving for excellence throughout the long creative process. "I love the Zootopia film series. Judy and Nick moved me the most—they were not recognized but kept working hard. They taught me that no matter what happens, never give up, face it positively, and dare to take action," he incorporates his insights into life into his works, making each grain painting carry an upward force.
The support of his family and villagers has provided warm backing for this love. His mother takes the initiative to help sort grains, and children from neighboring families curiously come to assist. He also patiently teaches the children to paint five-pointed stars and little rabbits, allowing the seeds of art to germinate in the countryside.
In 2023, Zhao Tongkai shared his works on short video platforms and quickly gained tens of thousands of fans. His works have not only received likes from domestic netizens but also attracted attention from overseas netizens in the United States and other countries, who praised them for "showcasing a different kind of art." Some netizens have reposted his works on foreign social media platforms, allowing Chinese rural art to shine on the world stage.
Today, his creative vision has become increasingly broad. In the future, he wants to use rice paintings to show the changes in Chinese villages, allowing the world to see the beauty and development of rural China. This rural youth from Binzhou, Shandong, is using the simplest way to revitalize rural art and tell the world the stories happening on the land of rural China.
