Drones, satellites aid China’s border rescue after Nepal mudslide, while experts explain why joint monitoring, early warning are challenging?

  Following the Nepal 8.26 mudslide disaster that severely impacted its border areas with China, advanced technologies have been mobilized to support rescue operations, including disaster-information datasets, aerial assets overcoming road and communication blockage, reconnaissance drones surveying the disaster area and searching for stranded people, and satellite remote sensing for disaster monitoring, according to media reports.

  A barrier lake formed upstream of Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border in Southwest China"s Xizang Autonomous Region following the mudslide caused by glacier collapse in Nepal. A total of 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries have been identified as unaccounted for, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday. Local authorities have warned that the barrier lake sits in an unstable geological setting and could breach, endangering rescue operations downstream, according to Xinhua.

  After the disaster occurred last Wednesday, the National Tibetan Plateau Data Center (TPDC) activated an emergency response, releasing its first dataset within seven hours and making all 26 datasets openly accessible by early Thursday.

  Li Xin, director of the TPDC, said that the thematic datasets include disaster-triggering factors such as glaciers, glacial lakes, rock glaciers and debris slopes, as well as meteorological data and multi-source remote sensing imagery collected before and after the disaster.
